PRESIDENT ALIYEV MEETS WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA IN NEW YORK

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On September 24, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with President of the United States Barack Obama in New York. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly.

The Presidents praised the successful development of the bilateral relations based on strategic cooperation.

Appreciating President Aliyev`s leadership, President Obama called Azerbaijan one of the most successful and influential countries in the region.

Stressing the existence of high-level political dialogue between the two countries, the Presidents emphasized the importance of developing bilateral relations in all fields, specifically in economic, energy and security areas.

President Obama expressed his appreciation for Azerbaijan’s contributions to supporting the ISAF mission in Afghanistan. Joint activities in combating international terrorism were commended at the meeting.

In the context of the long-standing fruitful energy cooperation between the two countries, Azerbaijan`s contribution to expanding the international energy cooperation was hailed.

Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Presidents underscored the necessity of finding the soonest solution to the problem for the sake of ensuring peace and stability in the region. President Aliyev reiterated the importance of solving the conflict on the basis of the principle of territorial integrity.

The leaders also discussed the process of democratic development in Azerbaijan as well as issues of regional and global concern.
