PRESIDENT ALIYEV UNVEILS NEW JEWISH SCHOOL IN BAKU

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On October 4, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev inaugurated the Chabad Ohr Avner Education Center for Jewish children in Baku.

Constructed with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation (Azerbaijan) and Ohr Avner Foundation (Israel), the three-store school comprises 30 classrooms designed for 450 students. Equipped with modern labs and teaching aids, the state-of-the-art school also features a library, Jewish History and Culture Center, a stadium and a pre-school facility.

Accompanied by First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva, President Aliyev cut the ribbon symbolizing the official opening of the school.

A video address by President Shimon Peres of Israel was demonstrated at the ceremony. Expressing his sincere gratitude to Azerbaijan’s Head of State, President Peres characterized the construction of the school a milestone event emphasizing once again the foresight of Azerbaijani leaders.

Congratulating the students and teachers of the new school, President Aliyev underscored that the construction of the school was a manifestation of tolerance in Azerbaijan. "This Center is another contribution to the friendship between Azerbaijanis and Jews," said the Head of State.

Lev Leviev, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS and the Ohr Avner Foundation, praised the attention paid by the government of Azerbaijan to the country’s Jewish community, and called Azerbaijan a beacon of tolerance.
