WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Second International Mugham Festival will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan on March 14-21, 2011.
Mugham is an ancient and unique form of modal music in Azerbaijan, traditionally transmitted orally. It is a highly complex art form that weds classical poetry and musical improvisation in specific local modes. In 2003, UNESCO proclaimed the Mugham of Azerbaijan a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The Festival will include concerts, an academic conference, Mugham competition and UNESCO symposium.
Numerous outstanding musicians and academicians as well as goodwill ambassadors representing various countries such as Azerbaijan, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Iran, Russia, Turkey, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, United States, etc. will participate at the Festival.
The First International Mugham Festival was held in Baku on March 18-25, 2009.
This year's festival is organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Union of Composers of Azerbaijan.
