December 12 marked the 11th anniversary of the death of Azerbaijani former president Heydar Aliyev. A talented politician and public figure, Heydar Aliyev demonstrated his ability as a national leader during the country's Soviet era and during the development of an independent Azerbaijan.

Washington event explores business environment and investment opportunities in Azerbaijan

The US Delegation of Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Foundation (AZPROMO) and the Diplomacy Matters Institute held an event on December 9 in Washington, DC about the business environment and investment opportunities in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani Ambassador to the US Elin Suleymanov discussed Azerbaijan's large-scale projects, non-oil sector development and its favorable business and investment climates, noting that $150 billion has been invested into the country's economy over the past decade.

US, Azerbaijani firms to partner on carbon nanotube project in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan Investment Company (AIC) and US-based SouthWest NanoTechnologies (SWeNT) will partner on a major carbon nanotube project located at Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park (SCIP), approximately 20 miles from Baku. Located in Norman, Oklahoma, SWeNT is a leading developer and manufacturer of single-wall, few-wall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes, which are used in industries ranging from consumer electronics to energy storage and composite manufacturing. "We are pleased to begin our collaboration with SWeNT and SCIP, and are optimistic about the implementation of this project in the Azerbaijan Republic," said Rovshan Najaf, Executive Director of AIC.

President Aliyev says Azerbaijan has a powerful economic basis


Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev spoke about the country's economic stability at the first All-Republican Forum of ASAN Volunteers in Baku's Heydar Aliyev Center on December 16. President Aliyev said that although global oil prices have fallen, Azerbaijani citizens will not be affected because, "we have a powerful economic basis." He added that the Azerbaijani manat rate is stable, which "testifies to the fact that Azerbaijan also has economic power, a well thought-out policy and a social policy."

FDI in Azerbaijan reaches $5.8 billion

Azerbaijan's economy has received $5.8 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) through the first three quarters of 2014. During this time, investments in the country's non-oil sector amounted to $855 million, while total foreign trade turnover volume totaled to $29.7 billion in the first half of 2014. Azerbaijan maintains trade relations with numerous countries, including Italy, Turkey, the UK, Germany, the US, Indonesia, Russia, Israel, France and Japan.

SOCAR interested in investing in EU economy

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has expressed interest in investing in the EU's economy. Elshad Nasirov, SOCAR Vice President, noted that Azerbaijan would make a great contribution to European energy security, and in turn the EU could provide strategic support to non-European investors. "Despite the fact that the initial gas supplies to Europe will be small, Azerbaijani gas can help to alleviate the problems of energy-consuming countries," added Nasirov.

Azeraijan ready to pump Kashagan oil to EU

Azerbaijan is ready to supply diesel fuel to Kazakhstan and to pump oil from Kazakhstan's Kashagan field to the European market. Zakir Hashimov, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Kazakhstan, noted that "Azerbaijan stands ready to provide its transit potential for friendly countries," and that "after the Kashagan field's launch, the volume of Kazakh oil transported via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan will increase."

Airbus sells in-orbit Spot 7 imaging satellite to Azerbaijan

France's Airbus Defense and Space has agreed to sell its Spot 7 medium-resolution optical Earth observation satellite to Azerbaijan's Azercosmos space agency as part of a long-term partnership in commercial remote sensing, Airbus and Azercosmos announced on December 2. As part of the agreement, Azercosmos has renamed the satellie Azersky and Airbus will build a satellite control center in Azerbaijan and will train a team of more than 25 Azerbaijani engineers in France during the next 18 months.

Baku International Telecom and IT fair marks 20th edition

Bakutel, the International Telecommunications and Information Technologies Conference, marked its 20th anniversary. Held December 2-5 at the Baku Expo Center, the conference offers a closer look at some of the most innovative technology in the Azeri capital. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that the event showcases "a lot of opportunities in technology, development, business and education."

Afghan Ambassador: Experience of development in Azerbaijan is an example for Afghanistan

Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov met with the newly-appointed Afghan Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohammad Tagi Khalili on December 13 to discuss bilateral relations in science, education, finance, transportation and other areas. Expressing gratitude for Azerbaijan's support for peace and stability in Afghanistan, Ambassador Khalili spoke of his country's appreciation for Azerbaijan's service and contributions to the international security assistance force. Ambassador Khalili also noted that Azerbaijan's development path is an example for his country.

Baku 2015 European Games announces first international Athlete Ambassadors


The Baku 2015 European Games announced on December 16 the first international athletes who will become ambassadors and be featured in marketing campaigns for the inaugural event. French rhythmic gymnast Kseniya Moustafaeva, Denmark's canoe sprinter René Holten Poulsen and Serbia's 3x3 basketball team members Dušan Domović Bulut, Marko Savic, Marko Zdero and Dejan Majstorovic have been selected as ambassadors and will represent their respective sports. Mr. Simon Clegg, Chief Operating Officer of Baku 2015, said: "I would like to congratulate the first of our international Athlete Ambassadors that have been selected and we are very much looking forward to working with them and the remaining ambassadors who will be announced over the coming months to help promote Baku 2015."
