First meeting of Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council kicks off in Baku

Baku hosted the first meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council on February 12 to discuss implementation, management and progress of the Southern Gas Corridor. In addition to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, participants at the meeting included high-level delegations from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Greece, Albania, Italy, Bulgaria, the United States and the United Kingdom; vice president of the European Commission’s Energy Union Maros Sefcovic; and representatives from the IFC, EBRD, SOCAR, BP-Azerbaijan, TANAP, TAP and other international organizations.

European Commission: Southern Gas Corridor at center of Azerbaijani-EU partnership

Vice president of the European Commission’s Energy Union Maros Sefcovic stated on February 11 that “Azerbaijan is a very important partner for the European Union (EU) and the Southern Gas Corridor project is at the center of this partnership.” During his visit to Azerbaijan, Mr. Sefcovic also added that the project can encourage greater economic cooperation, improve energy security and add 30,000 jobs in countries along the corridor. “Our objective remains that the entire infrastructure project along the corridor will be operational by 2019-2020,” he said.

Europe wants to double volumes of gas coming from Azerbaijan

The first meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council discussed increasing the volume of Azerbaijani gas supplies to Europe, said Maros Sefcovic, vice president of the European Commission’s Energy Union. “Technologically, the project is capable of delivering 10 billion cubic meters of gas, but this figure can be increased to 20 billion cubic meters. The Shah Deniz field has great potential,” he noted.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the US Department of State, on February 17. The parties expressed their satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations between the two countries in a variety of fields, and hailed Azerbaijan-US cooperation.

US official calls for release of Azerbaijani hostages

“Azerbaijani prisoners, held by Armenia, should be returned,” said Victoria Nuland, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, at a press conference in Baku on February 17. Armenian special forces killed Azerbaijani citizen Hasan Hasanov and took hostage Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov on July 11 while they were visiting the graves of their relatives in the occupied Kalbajar region. Dilgam Asgarov was sentenced to life imprisonment and Shahbaz Guliyev to 22 years in prison. Ms. Nuland said the return of the prisoners should be carried out as a humanitarian gesture, noting that she will raise this issue when she travels to Yerevan, Armenia on February 18.

US ambassador issues welcome statement to people of Azerbaijan

Newly-appointed US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta issued a welcome statement to the people of Azerbaijan on February 11. First introducing himself in Azerbaijani, Ambassador Cekuta then said that he was “deeply honored by President Obama’s decision to nominate me to serve in Azerbaijan.” He continued: “since Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991 our countries have built a strong partnership…As Ambassador I look forward to working with all Azerbaijanis to move on these priorities and deepen and broaden our people-to-people ties.”

Ali Hasanov: Azerbaijan is a genuine secular model for Islamic world

Ali Hasanov, head of the public and political affairs department within President Ilham Aliyev’s administration, recently highlighted Azerbaijan’s religiously tolerant community, saying: “Despite [our country’s] difficult geopolitical situation, we have managed to turn Azerbaijan into a strong, prosperous and stably developing country. Against the background of confrontations, the strengthening of radicalism and religious intolerance in the world, the international community can see – in the example of a modern and strong Azerbaijan – a genuine model for many countries.”

Members of the Los Angeles-based Sinai Temple, one of the largest and most influential religious centers of American Jewry, donated a Sefer Torah to the Mountainous Jewish Community of Azerbaijan. The Sefer Torah was presented on February 3 at a special ceremony held at the Sinai Temple, where over 400 members of Los Angeles’s Jewish community attended the ceremony.

Azerbaijan prepares new energy product for export

Azerbaijan’s electric energy industry has progressed significantly in the past ten years. Recently, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev established Azerishig JSC, a new organization that will operate electricity distribution networks throughout the country. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s power grid capacity has increased by 40 percent in the last decade, exceeding 7,100 megawatts, a feat made possible by construction of new power stations and facilities.

US, France to launch second Azerbaijani satellite

US and French companies will collaborate on the launch of Azerbaijan’s second telecommunications satellite, Azerspace-2, said Ali Abbasov, Azerbaijani Minister of Communications and High Technologies. “Since February 2013, Azerbaijan’s first satellite has been in orbit and work on the second satellite is currently underway,” added Mr. Abbasov. Azerspace-2’s orbit is scheduled for 2017.
